Bread on Earth is a living archive and research project founded by Lexie Smith. It explores the potential of bread - the ultimate food stuff, synonymous with wealth, poverty, god, and the mundane - as a social, political, economic, and ecological barometer.

Bread on Earth is hard to define, just like its subject, but often considers power and ideology in global foodways, and bread and grain’s potentials to deliver us perspective and compassion, and their opposites, too. This takes the form of research and archiving, workshops, writing, recipe development and bread baking, image and object-making, and installations.

The experiments undertaken through this project are indebted to the aesthetics, history, science and magic of bread, and all of those who have and continue to keep them alive.
